Pregame tossin' and twistin'. The Oakland Athletics pitchers had themselves a fun little workout before the team took on the Kansas City Royals at KC's Kauffman Stadium May 10, 2007. The A's ended up beating the Royals by a score of 17-3 that day. Seen here in this all-smiles workout are Huston Street, Danny Haren, Joe Blanton, Chad Gaudin, Justin Duchscherer, Jay Marshall, Jay Witasick, Curt Young, Kiko Calero, Curt Young, and Clarence Cockrell. Oakland A's & Washington Hospital Team Up to Raise Diabetes Awareness. Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis recently took a break from his busy baseball schedule to talk to children about a topic that is very close to his heart -- diabetes. Ellis grew up watching his paternal grandmother suffer from Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, and he has also watched one of his best childhood friends grow up with juvenile diabetes. Those reminders motivated Ellis and his Oakland A's teammate, Bobby Crosby, to start a fundraising campaign to raise funds and awareness for diabetes. Through the "Putouts For Diabetes Program," Ellis and Crosby each donate per putout toward their annual presentation to the American Diabetes Association. To help raise diabetes awareness, Ellis teamed up with Washington Hospital to speak to more than 50 children at the Fremont/Newark YMCA in order to promote healthy eating and increased activity in hopes of preventing diabetes.

The calendar said March, so it's time for another season on baseball. Our first Cactus League game took us to Phoenix Muni to see the Oakland A's host the Milwaukee Brewers. Both teams started some of their regulars, but the game quickly turned into a showcase for the group of players hoping to make the final, 40-man roster. These clearly are teams going in opposite directions: the A's are totally rebuilding while the Brew Crew are hoping to win the National League Central. Featured in this video are a handful of players including Ryan Braun, Matt Parra (Brewers pitching hopeful), Carlos Gonzalez (who came from the D-backs in the trade for Dan Haren), personal favorite Huston Street and former (emphasis on former) great closer Eric Gagne. To say Gagne looked awful is an understatement. Jack Cust, a one-dimensional slugger on the A's hit two homers. Interesting in light of the fact he was mentioned in the steroids report.

Aaron Cunningham at-bat during a summer 2007 California League contest between the Visalia Oaks and the Lake Elsinore Storm. At the time, Cunningham was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. In late December of 2007, he was dealt to the Oakland Athletics along with Carlos Gonzalez, Chris Carter, Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith in exchange for All-Star hurler Danny Haren and Connor Robertson. Cunningham began the 2007 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and he earned Carolina League All-Star honors after batting .294/.376/.476 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 252 at-bats with the Winston-Salem Warthogs. He was traded to the Diamondbacks at midseason for infielder Danny Richar. The 5-foot-11, 195 pound outfielder hit .358/.386/.553 with three dingers, 20 RBIs and five stolen bases for the Single-A Visalia Oaks of the California League. He ended the season at Double-A Mobile where he batted .288/.364/.534 with five round-trippers, 20 RBI and one steal in 118 at-bats with the Bay Bears. Cunningham was selected by the White Sox in the sixth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Everett Community College in the state of Washington.
